St-Nazaire 5th May 2016

The Loire Princess docked at the old submarine bunkers in St Nazaire

The ship we are now cruising on is a paddle wheeler, designed to sail on the shallow waters of the Loire River. After boarding it yesterday afternoon, it left Nantes to sail down river to arrive in the harbour on the river and Atlantic Ocean around 12 midnight.

This morning we had elected not to join the tour to Guerande and its nearby salt marshes, instead just wandering around Saint-Nazaire at our leisure. How fortunate we were to make this decision as we found only by chance the museum of the submarine base used during WW2 by the French and then the Germans. There was even an old French Submarine open to display which we ventured into. A bit of a squeeze for me and a challenge for DH but what a fantastic find!. DH was wrapped.

We climbed up to the top of one the bunkers for a panoramic view over the estuary, Port Chantier Naval ship building base and another major ship building area. In the naval base they are building an aircraft carrier, in the other is the almost completed Harmony of the Seas. soon the be the biggest ship in the world!

Wow, so far we have seen all sorts of structures from various periods of history. the Romans, medieval, King Louis xiv, revolutionary, Napoleon, WWI and WWII and now. What a mixture.
