Bordeaux, our last port of this cruise Tuesday 3rd May 2016

The ship sailed back from Burg where we had moored overnight. After lunch we joined a tour of the city centre. Bordeaux had been established by the Romans who had built a wall around the city to protect its inhabitants from invading armies. In the 17th century Bordeaux was the biggest and busiest port in Europe bar London. Through its busy port the city became wealthy, its prosperity flowed to the buildings, churches and monuments.

We drove over the pont de pierre, one of the last bridges built by Neapolean 1. It spans the river Garonne with its many arches and is lit by beautiful lamp posts. Apart from being a carriageway for motor vehicals, it is also has a tram tracks allowing trams to cross.

Apart from the many narrow streets lined with 3-4 storey buildings, we saw St Michel Cathedral, opera house, Eglise Notre Dame, arched gateways and again water mirror.
