Success again. We caught another public bus from Montparnasse at 2 Euro each to Les Invalides, then the same return. Wow only a 10 minute ride where we were dropped off in front of the gold roofed dome of the museum. Once we bought our entry tickets we headed straight to the Tomb of Napoleon 1. This tomb is made of red quartiles and surrounded by 12 sculptures of Napoleon's military campaigns. We were able to view this from above as it is located in an excavated site in the Dome Church, however we then walked down a flight of stairs to view this tomb on the same level. This is where the sculptures of the battles are mounted on the walls surrounding the tomb.
DH and I spent over 2 hours going through the galleries for WW1 and WW2. Even though we have spent many hours in various military museums, we were en lighted to read of these wars through French eyes. I still find it very tragic and upsetting.
The Cathedral of Saint-Louis des Invalides was our next area to visit. This cathedral is for French Armies. Originally designed for the soldiers to attend worship the same time as the King, but reinforced by etiquette as the King used a different entrance.
Whilst we were there we visited the Charles de Gaulle gallery which we thought had been well presented. Before heading home we stopped to enjoy a salad lunch at the local cafe in the museum. We didn't wait too long for our bus back. I think they run in maybe 10 mins intervals which is great for us.
It is amazing to see the sun setting late. It is nearly 10pm before it gets dark. We have only found this out on Sunday, 6 days after arriving, as usually we are asleep by 7pm and still getting over the jet lag.
