Cologne

After sailing through the night and morning along the Lek, Lower Rhine and Rhine rivers, we arrived at Cologne. Cologne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the twin-towered Gothic Cathedral which began in 1248 and finally completed in 1880, only just surving intense bombing during WW2. The ship moored about 1 1/2 kilometres away from the major city centre where most of the attractions are located. The ship offered 5 guided walking groups, one being for the slower walkers.

Several places of interst were the Old City Hall (where I had been pointed to an unusual gargyle of naked bottom), 4711 House, Cologne's most famous product, remains of Roman structures and a medievil Jewish ritual bath.

The afternoon ended at the local tavern where we sampled the local Kolsch beer which is served in .2 litre glasses.
